Open Meeting – The Origins of Newdigate

This will be a discussion evening to learn and develop knowledge on the history and development of our village. We intend to hold four meetings in total. The first will cover the period from Saxon times to 1500 AD. What was life like in Newdigate during the Saxon period and after the Norman Conquest? The Coach Roads to Brighton a talk by Geoffrey Hewlett

Geoffrey Hewlett noticed that many roads are called 'Brighton Road' and he wondered why. He walked the routes from London to Brighton and visited many of the coaching inns and came to tall us of his discoveries. This evocative talk was attended by over forty people who also enjoyed minced pies and mulled wine.

Open Discussion concerning the Origins of Newdigate – 2

Following the well attended open discussion on the 7th November the next session has been scheduled for the 16th January. We covered from Roman times right up to the 12th century when the name of the village was first recorded. The next discussion will start from the 12th century and cover the rise of the Newdigate family, the expansion of the manors in Newdigate, Magna Carta, the black death, the growth of trade, the deer park at Newdigate. The Crystal Palace – A Talk by Michael Gilbert

Renowned speaker and London guide Michael Gilbert will be coming to give us a talk about the Crystal Palace. Erected in 1851 to designs by Joseph Paxton it housed the Great Exhibition. Over 800,000 people paid a penny to visit the exhibition. In 1854 it was dismantled and re-erected at Sydenham. It was destroyed by fire in 1936.

Rebuilding the Newdigate Bakehouse

Claire Vidler who is responsible for the rebuilding of the Newdigate Bakehouse at the Weald & Downland Living Museum will be talking about how the building has been re-erected brick by brick. It was originally situated on the site of Chestnut Cottage behind the red telephone box in the centre of the village. It was dismantled in 1988.

Graham Capel will once again chair an open discussion. This time we will be discussing the development of the manors and the enlarging or building of some of the houses that can be seen in Newdigate today. There will be no charge but we will be grateful to receive donations to cover the cost of the hall and refreshments.

Guided Walk of Deepdene

Following the talk on the previous Tuesday evening Peter Sturge took a group of us on a guided walk along the Deepdene Trail. It was fascinating following the pathways of what was once a beautiful garden. We ended at the mausoleum. The rain started falling just as we entered the Dorking Golf Club for our buffet lunch.

Newdigate School Fete

We launched Jane Lilley's new book entitled 'A Walk Around the Village of Newdigate' at the School Fete. This is a fitting venue as May Pole Dancing and the Crowning of the May Queen has taken place in the village for over 80 years and is very much part of village history.
