Heritage Open Day – 11th September 2021

The theme for this year’s Heritage Open Days was ‘Edible England’. The Society presented a display in the Village Hall entitled ‘Edible Newdigate’.

Our principal display was called ‘How Newdigate fed itself in the past’. With text by Jane Lilley and accompanying photographs we described and illustrated how the village supplied itself with food a hundred years ago. We also specially published booklets entitled ‘Shops and Shopping’ and ‘F.E. Green – Farmer, Author & Activist’. In addition we reproduced a leaflet describing products made by Col. French at King John’s Barn in Cudworth after World War One. Our sales table was very busy selling tea towels, bags and our many publications. Over 100 people attended the event. The Horticultural Society put on a splendid display of locally grown produce. We also invited the Top Cat Cafe, Dorking Brewery, the Dorking Food Float, Aldhurst Farm, the Gin Kitchen, Busy Bees and Cocoa Island to show their products.
